The above picture is of three guys. It may look as though it’s just 3 zany guys rocking some xbox having a grand old time. My friends, this is not true. If you look really close, gaze deep into the windows to their very souls, you will find that this is a picture of three sadists, bent on my destruction. Their new game, Bit.Trip Core is delicious, and yet, it will be my undoing. More just a click away…

This is the kind of stuff I dreamed would exist when I was a kid.
How sad is that?
This new coin bank by legendary Japanese toy wizards, Takara Tomy, plays a very realistic game of Space Invaders complete with sound effects and graphics, housed inside of a 1/6 scale model of the 1970’s cocktail table.
Video after the jump.

Sorry I was gone for so long, guys. Had family in from Japan and it was a non-stop fun fest here at the Jason house.
So over the weekend, I got some game time in now that things have settled down a bit. Sort of an eclectic weekend, too. With so much rain, I had time to go through old boxes of stuff. Have a gander at my…dum dum da-dum….WEEKEND PLAYLIST!

My good friend Scott over at Innerspace Sound Labs (http://www.myspace.com/innerspacesoundlabs) just sent me over this friggin’ AWESOME photo. It is absolutely beautiful in every way. I am going to print this and hang it in my office just to remind me of how awesome game history is.
Innerspace Sound Labs is the place where we do the post production on Bit Museum, and it’s perhaps the coolest place on Earth. If you have a record to be made, you should give Scotty a shout!

OH SNAP! POOOOOOONNNGGG!!!

I think it’s pretty clear that we here in Jason’s little world are fans of classic games. As such, I, at least, am a fan of games that hark back to a simpler time. A time when men were men, and people who played video games got beat up, and were largely ignored by women. Now, years later, I no longer get beat up, but am still ignored by women. While modern games are all well and good, there will always be a place in my heart, in my very soul, for games that take me back to my earlier days of nerd-dom. The other night, I was poking around the Playstation Network and stumbled upon a game that is kind of a mix between the classic games Defender, and Uridium. That game, is called Astro Tripper.

OH HAI!
“No, mom! I said an Atari 2600! Look at the picture in the Sears WishBook! Come on, it doesn’t look anything like this!”
Sound familiar? Perhaps it was your own whiny lament on a Christmas morning some decades ago. But buck up! The Magnavox Odyssey 2 was a worthy contender to the Atari 2600, and while it couldn’t stand up against ol’ Wood Grain, it was still a moderately successful Generation 2 cartridge-based game system.

Ahh Geometry Wars, about the only thing on Xbox I’d find worth playing. Thankfully, I don’t need to own an Xbox in order to play it! Jason and I have been fans of the Wii and DS versions of this game for a while now. The DS version, in particular, is to blame for countless hours of my life passed, never to return. Just look at the absolute chaos in the screenshot above! (disclaimer: I believe that’s the Xbox version pictured, but the point remains).
Recently, I stumbled upon a flash version of GW. It’s called “Space Pips” and is a fairly faithful representation of the original. The enemy ships are mostly the same as you’d find on GW. It may not be perfect, but it’s a nice distraction. give it a shot! If you have never played GW before, give Space Pips a try and, if you like it, grab the console version. The console versions are very nicely polished and great for retro fans.
Space Pips!

Eating chocolate is already one of the more awesome parts of life. Now imagine eating chocolate, and finding miniature Super Mario statues inside. Don’t worry…the plastic capsule contained within gives you fair warning you’re about to bite into a toy.Check it out.
Editor’s Note: The “Super Mario Bros Game & Watch” Peek Poke Episode has been pushed to Episode 3. Sorry! It’s coming soon.

Tabletop electronic games are alive and well…but now they’re charging your ass per-play.
These two Game Center Banks straight outta Japan feature Breakout and Tetris, and will cost you a coin (of any kind) per play. Ingenious. In the same vein as Excalibur’s new Space Invaders and Frogger Tabletops, these units also use Coleco’s tried-and-true 1980’s case mold. Check out Peek/Poke #1 for more on that.
The user’s manual actually includes an agreement that obligates you to send all the coins in the bank to the manufacturer once every month. (Nah, I’m just messin’ with ya.) Each game can already start taking your money at $40 apiece. Buy here.
