When I said I wanted to do a Weekend Playlist regularly, I meant regularly according to MY definition. This does not necessarily coincide with YOUR definition of regularly. This weekend I played two games, pretty much. One of them is older and has been out for some time, the other is really old, but recently got a facelift for current generation consoles. Thankfully, it was rainy here on Saturday, perfect excuse to blow the entire day playing games! I love rainy weekends!

It has been a while since we have done a weekend playlist, so I thought I might pipe up and throw one at you. Of course, I spent time playing Bit.Trip Core. But the Wii didn’t take up all of my gaming time this weekend.

Sorry I was gone for so long, guys. Had family in from Japan and it was a non-stop fun fest here at the Jason house.
So over the weekend, I got some game time in now that things have settled down a bit. Sort of an eclectic weekend, too. With so much rain, I had time to go through old boxes of stuff. Have a gander at my…dum dum da-dum….WEEKEND PLAYLIST!

Ever spend a Saturday afternoon sitting in your mom’s basement, unwashed, and in the same outfit of sweatpants and filthy, pizza and beer stained wife-beater tank top you’ve been wearing for 3 weeks, playing Asteroids? Ever then decide you would like to move on to something a little more modern, but still has that delicious retro feel to it and think, Geometry Wars? Ever then think to yourself “man, it would be awesome if I could combine all the best parts of Asteroids, and Geometry Wars AND play in full 1080p? Well you can, and have been able to for almost 2 years now if you own a Playstation 3.

I think it’s pretty clear that we here in Jason’s little world are fans of classic games. As such, I, at least, am a fan of games that hark back to a simpler time. A time when men were men, and people who played video games got beat up, and were largely ignored by women. Now, years later, I no longer get beat up, but am still ignored by women. While modern games are all well and good, there will always be a place in my heart, in my very soul, for games that take me back to my earlier days of nerd-dom. The other night, I was poking around the Playstation Network and stumbled upon a game that is kind of a mix between the classic games Defender, and Uridium. That game, is called Astro Tripper.

Right now for $249 and the promise to keep a Sony-branded credit card next to your buttocks at all times, you can take home a shiny new PS3. Plus, they’ll double your warranty in case, despite ALL the warnings, you still really believe it’s a George Forman grill and shove bratwurst into it.
Some kinda cash-back deal or some other such tomfoolery…check it out here.
And that snide comment about credit, don’t listen to me. I really have no idea how economics work in the least bit.

Downloadable content just keeps getting sexier and sexier and sexier. And the names get proportionately longer with the sexiness, apparently.
A fan of Street Fighter from back in my High School Days, this graphical update to one of my all-time favorite video games has sent tingly feelings down my back and a great deal of the way down my pants as well. Capcom, in partnership with the artists at Udon comics, have done an outstanding job with this release. The online mode is something I remember wishing I could do with my SNES back in 1992. If someone told me back then that an arcade experience at home like this would someday be possible, I would have just hibernated and slept for 16 years. Of course I would have probably starved to death, and if I survived, woken up in a horrible state, probably full of festering wounds from all manner of rodents who gnawed at my flesh all those years.
Tournament mode is particularly fun (I’ve won one already, ah thank you.) Voice chat’s there too, and I am particularly fond of the arcade style in which online has been implemented. Watch the other matches while you wait your turn, winner stays. Though now at home, the loser doesn’t even have to pay! Who could ask for anything more?
There are some places I think the clean-up crew in the art department could have touched up a bit, perhaps they’ll address these issues in later updates. Some of the player’s feet seem to wiggle around and vibrate as if the individual cells of animation were not properly placed. Akuma seems to have this problem particularly. Now If Capcom wants to really release a bad-ass update, they’ll add a bonus character, like Gouken, to hype people for SFIV.
Don’t even get me started on SFIV. My whole face will blow up with awesomeness overload.
